What does cedarwood smell like in perfume?

In a finished perfume, cedarwood can bring a dry woody outline to softer, sweeter or spicier notes. It may feel crisp and pencil-like, smooth and warm, or subtly smoky. The effect depends on the cedarwood material and the whole composition, rather than the note name alone.

Cedarwood vs oud, vetiver and oakmoss

Cedarwood and oud are different fragrance notes. Compare their typical character with other woody and earthy notes:

  • Oud can bring smoky, resinous or earthy complexity alongside cedarwood’s drier outline.
  • Vetiver often brings earthy, root-like or smoky facets; cedarwood can feel more like dry timber.
  • Oakmoss can suggest a green, mossy forest floor, contrasting with cedarwood’s woody character.

Different cedarwood materials

The name covers different materials. Virginia cedarwood comes from Juniperus virginiana, a juniper, while Atlas cedarwood comes from Cedrus atlantica, a true cedar. Virginia material can be dry and woody with mild sweetness; Atlas material can be warmer and more balsamic. These examples describe raw materials, not the specific botanical ingredients in our fragrances.

How to choose a perfume with cedarwood

Look beyond the cedarwood note and compare what surrounds it. For aromatic woods, explore a blend with cardamom, sandalwood or oud. For warmer spice and sweetness, consider cedarwood alongside leather, amber and vanilla.

Our two fragrances show these different combinations in their published note lists:

Start with the Broken Cricket Bat 1.5ml sample if the woody direction appeals. To compare both styles, choose the Discovery Duo. These are finished perfumes, so neither represents the smell of cedarwood oil on its own.

How long does cedarwood last?

Cedarwood is often used in the heart or base of a fragrance, but a note list cannot tell you how many hours a perfume will last. The formula, application and your skin affect the result. Sample the finished fragrance to judge its development for yourself.

Cedarwood questions

Is cedarwood aftershave the same as cedarwood perfume?

People sometimes use aftershave to mean a fragrance marketed to men, but an aftershave lotion and an Eau de Parfum are different products. Check the product type rather than the search term. Broken Cricket Bat and Peppery Amber are Eau de Parfum fragrances.

Does cedarwood smell like sandalwood?

Both are woody, but cedarwood is generally drier and more defined, while sandalwood tends to be softer and creamier. Their exact character depends on the materials and blend.

Does cedarwood smell good?

That depends on your taste. If you enjoy dry woods, aromatic notes or a less sugary woody scent, it may appeal to you. Try it in a finished perfume before deciding.

Is cedarwood a top, heart or base note?

It is commonly used in the heart or base. Signature Smithen lists cedarwood in the heart of both Broken Cricket Bat and Peppery Amber.

Does cedarwood smell masculine?

Cedarwood has no gender. It can feature in fragrances worn by anyone, including unisex compositions.

Are cedar and cedarwood the same?

Cedar can refer to several trees. In perfumery, cedarwood can describe oils from true cedars or from junipers such as Virginia cedarwood. The name alone does not identify the species or its precise scent.

Is cedarwood a natural ingredient?

Cedarwood oils can be distilled from wood. Perfumers can also create cedar-like effects with other fragrance materials. A cedarwood note does not by itself establish the ingredients used.
